I just finished watching a crash test in the show Fifth Gear. They slammed a Renault Espace (minivan) against a Land Rover Discovery (SUV) and the result was surprising. The driver of the SUV would have died and the design of the Espace would have allowed the driver to walk away from the 40mph crash. Both cars in the test were going 40mph at opposite directions.
Sure, it's supposed to be safer. It's a similar mentality adopted in the nuclear (or nuke-lar) arms race. No one has ever studied the effect of the size of these SUVs or minivans. Is it just me or not getting into an accident in the first place is a more preferable scenario? People with SUVs and minivans always cut people off because they receive no extra training on driving a longer vehicle. Motorcycle riders have to obtain a motorcycle license. Truck drivers have to do the same. Why not require a license for driving an SUV or minivan? At least all these drivers will be forced to learn (a little bit better) to drive their vehicles. And it'll keep us car drivers safer from these reckless, lumbering, blind-spot filled, multi-ton accidents waiting to happen.
